Two Chesham children were awarded healthy eating treats after winning the 2009 Chesham In Bloom Poster Competition. The theme of this year’s competition was “Make Chesham Tidy” and the Chesham in Bloom team were inundated with hundreds of posters from local children, making judging a real challenge.

But in the two age categories, there were outstanding winners. Niamh Taylor Connor, aged 9, from Waterside School won the 8+ category with a beautiful drawing of the town’s clock tower. Beth Richards, aged 7, won the Under 8s category and was declared overall competition winner with her bold design featuring a littered street with the phrase “My lovely Chesham is spoilt with litter and dog mess. I wish people would use the bins”.

Kathryn Graves from Chesham in Bloom said, “Like the rest of Chesham’s residents, the town’s children want to live somewhere that is free of litter and mess. We were delighted that the children were inspired by our theme and produced fantastic artwork that we are proud to display around town to remind everyone to do their bit to make Chesham tidy”.

Both Niamh and Beth won healthy eating hampers, donated by Chesham Waitrose, a big supporter of Chesham in Bloom. Their posters will be on display in the Chesham store in the run up to the 16th July, the day the Royal Horticultural Society judges will come to assess the town. Other posters will be displayed round town by shops that are keen to lend their support to the Make Chesham Tidy campaign.

And putting their money where their mouth is, Chesham in Bloom is teaming up with Chesham Environmental Group to have a town-wide litter-pick on the 15th July. Town councillors and In Bloom members will be among the residents helping to clean up the streets in preparation for the judges’ visit.
