Mayoral Awards Winners 2019

Our recent Annual Town Meeting was a celebratory affair, as Mayor Cllr Jane MacBean gave out the 2019 Mayoral Awards, which are nominated by the public. The Business Award was won by The Tavern in recognition of its support for local community groups and for being the first High Street business to sign up to the Can Collect charity recycling initiative.

The People’s Award was won by Ricky Dutton, for her tireless volunteering for numerous local events and charities, with a particular focus on local horse riding groups and activities. She donated her £150 prize money to the Rennie Grove Hospice.

Our brand-new award for volunteer teams, was given to Chesham Community Fridge. Although the Fridge only opened in September 2018, this volunteer initiative has already stopped more than 5 tonnes of perfectly good food going to landfill by making it freely available to anybody who can use it. There is no referral system or forms to fill in, making it easily accessible for people in need.

Cllr MacBean also announced some one-off awards to recognise community service. These were for musicians Jamie Kendall and Kenneth Brown who participated in the public services commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War One; a group of young people from local churches who assisted a community in the Munsieville Township in South Africa; and the late Zafa Ali Raja for services to Chesham’s community, including the instrumental role he played in the building of Chesham Mosque.
