Mayoral Awards Winners
People’s Award
2008
Christine Stanners has been involved in voluntary work for many years and was nominated for her work promoting the health and welfare of older people – particularly for her work with the Chesham Over 50s Positive Action Group (COPAG) from its very beginnings to the present day.
2007
David McCluney won the award largely for his work as a member of the Amersham and Chesham Lions Club, but also for his outstanding commitment to improving the lives of people throughout the community. David was President of the Lions Club twice, in 1976/7 and 1999/2000 and raised funds for local charities and Chesham people in need. David also worked proactively with many local organisations, such as churches, youth groups, mental health services and disability groups.
2006
Reverend Colin Cartwright won the award for being the driving force behind Chesham becoming a Fairtrade Town. He motivated, encouraged and inspired people in Chesham to think about how they could make a difference all over the world.
2005
Bob Fish won the inaugural People’s Award for his work supporting Voluntary Action and other organisations within the town, including Chesham Citizens Advice Bureau and the Cancer Research UK charity shop. He is also a walk leader for the Ramblers Association and volunteered at Chesham Hospital prior to its closure.
Rafe Chiles Young Person’s Award
2008
Paige Lacey-Akers was nominated for her work on projects and activities with Chesham Youth Centre, including a 10-month intergenerational project across Bucks in which she took part in community activities for older people. Paige was also fundamental in helping to plan and organise other projects, supporting youth workers and helping to rally and enthuse other young people to get involved.
2007
Adam Sims was nominated for his active recruitment work for Chesham’s Youth Council. Adam has been involved in mentoring new, younger members through induction into their new roles. Adam has also played a significant part in establishing, managing and fund-raising for the Youth Council’s project on underage drinking, which was their first major project of 2006.
2006
Lisa Page was a Chesham Park Community College student at the time of winning the award. She was nominated for her voluntary work with the Pyramid Trust which works to help primary school age children to fulfil their potential, both at school and in general life.
Business Award
2008
The Drawingroom is a café and art gallery in the heart of the town, and received two independent nominations for very different reasons. The first nomination recognised the importance of The Drawingroom as a community gathering point, whilst the second focused on the work of the owner Richard Elkington, for his years of effort combating graffiti and litter around the town.
2007
Chesham’s Waitrose branch were presented with the Business Award for their significant involvement in the community, including their participation in Chesham in Bloom, fundraising events for local schools, providing education in healthy eating and Fairtrade, supporting the Young Enterprise group from Chesham High School and sponsoring the Good Food Technology Award at Chesham Park Community College, in addition to charity work.
2006
Chapter One, a High Street booksellers, was recognised for their community involvement, including sponsoring the town’s Christmas lights, providing books for schools, working with Chesham in Bloom, the Town Centre Consortium and the Chesham Society to improve the town.
