Volunteers dig out flag iris from a river channel.
We are working with Chesham Environmental Group on a new project to enhance Skottowes Pond in Lowndes Park.
This week, volunteers from various environmental groups got their waders on and headed to the Chesham 1879 Tennis & Squash Club in Pednor. The river channel in the grounds of the sports club has an abundance of emergent aquatic plants, such as flag iris. The volunteers dug out and bagged up some of these plants ready for transplanting into Skottowes Pond.
The plants were collected by our Parks & Premises team and have been transported to a large tank at our parks Depot as an interim measure. In due course, they will be planted into the pond by the Parks team.
It is hoped that they will establish on the margins of the pond, creating new habitat for insects and young fish.
We would like to thank all the volunteers who took part, and also to Chesham 1879 for sharing some of their plants.
