War Memorial Conservation

In the run up to Remembrance Day, the town's 101-year old war memorial has undergone specialist conservation treatment.

Specialist conservators, Elliot Ryder Conservation, gave the memorial a light clean to remove algal growth, which had given a green appearance to parts of the statue.

Shelter Coat, which is used on the Cenotaph in London, was then applied to both the main statue and the World War Two obelisks. And finally, the bronze plaques were coated with microcrystalline wax.

The Shelter Coat will protect the soft Portland Stone, helping to reduce the rate of erosion. Elliot Ryder Conservation will return after a year to monitor the condition of the memorial.
