The Big Community Takeaway is celebrating its first full year of making a difference to the lives of people in Chesham, Amersham and the surrounding areas. Since its inception in May 2020, the Takeaway has provided over 10,000 two-course hot-meals to people in crisis, 47% of whom are children. They have only been able to do this because of their amazing volunteers, who’ve given up their time to cook, pack and deliver the food.
In addition, the Takeaway team have been so grateful to their supporters for their generosity, from local people who donated to the JustGiving page, and to organisations such as the Clare Foundation, Heart of Bucks and Buckinghamshire Council who have helped them continue the good work.
What started as a response to help people in crisis because of the Covid-19 pandemic has now evolved – the Takeaway team really didn’t expect to be going a year later, but discovered that what their work has shown is that food poverty is a real issue here in the Chilterns, despite being one of the most affluent areas of the country.
To help beat this and overcome food poverty, the Big Community Takeaway has launched its plans to grow to help meet this need and aim to end food poverty in the Chilterns. They’re expanding to have a permanent operation in Amersham so they can reach more people in need.
In addition, they have launched their website where you can find out more about the organisation, how they work, how people can benefit from their service and how you can support them. Visit www.bigcommunitytakeaway.org.uk to find out more.
